Yes! A copy of your landing paper, also known as Record of Landing, Confirmation of Permanent Residence, COPR, or IMM1000 has to be included with your application to renew your Indian passport from inside Canada.
If your landing paper is missing, stolen, or destroyed, then you can apply to replace your IMM1000 here.
Along with completing an online application directly with BLS Canada, additional supporting documents are required as well.
Remember, you can renew your Indian passport within a year of its expiry date.
Documents Required to Renew Indian Passport from Canada
-A copy of first and last page of the current Indian passport.
-A copy of current legal status in Canada (PR card / study permit / work permit / visitor record).
-A copy of Canadian landing paper/COPR
-A copy of proof of address (copy of driving license or any other government issued address proof).
What is a Landing Paper?
An IMM1000, also known as Record of Landing (also known as a Landing Paper) is a document that every new permanent resident of Canada received when they originally first landed in Canada. For decades, the Record of Landing was a permanent resident’s only proof that they were a “landed immigrant” allowed to live in Canada, and they would present it at the border when they would enter the country.
With the coming into force of IRPA (the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act), which is the current law governing all Canadian immigration, permanent resident cards and other documents were introduced. A document called Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292 or IMM 5688), which is often abbreviated COPR, would be issued to new permanent residents before they travelled to Canada to “land”. This document is then signed in front of an immigration officer when they land in Canada, and then it becomes a “Record of Landing” which is proof that someone is a permanent resident until they receive their PR card a few months later.
The Record of Landing is an important document and will be required when you apply for a pension and for other benefits. If the document is lost, you will have to replace it.
Can I replace my Record of Landing, Work Permit or Study Permit?
Yes! Records of Landing/IMM1000 and COPR used to be replaced with a certified copy of the original document taken from a microfiche archive of immigration documents in Ottawa. However, in 2012, IRCC stopped issuing certified copies of IMM1000 documents and they are now replaced by an electronic document called a Verification of Status. The Verification of Status document is issued via email (or regular mail if you do not have an email address) and consists of the same information, and sometimes additional information, in a standardized format.
Work Permits, Study Permits, and Visitor Records can all be replaced with a slightly different process.
Can I change the information on my IMM1000?
Yes! Some people have had incorrect information on their official documents since the time they landed in Canada, sometimes decades ago. This information can be changed through an application to amend your record of landing. Contact us for more information.
What documents are required to get your Verification of Status?
You can do this by filing an Application for a Verification of Status (VOS) or Replacement of an Immigration Document and submitting it with the required application fee and requested supporting documents:
- 1 valid photo ID
- 1 other piece of identification
Getting your IMM1000 replaced urgently
A Verification of Status Application takes approximately 6 months to process unless you request urgent processing. Urgent processing may be granted for various reasons. If your proof of urgency is accepted, your Verification of Status should be issued within about 4 weeks.
The government is strict regarding who can apply for urgent replacement of their IMM1000. Situations which may qualify for urgency include:
- Document requested as part of Canada Pension application
- Document required for SIN number or employment
- You need to travel because of a death or serious illness in the family
- Foreign Passport Applications within Canada
