Canada’s construction industry is facing significant labor shortages, particularly in the GTA, where rapid development and growth demand skilled labor. This program not only helps fill these gaps but also provides a lifeline for workers living in precarious conditions due to their immigration status. This program, initially launched in 2019, aims to address labor shortages and improve the working conditions of those whose immigration status has lapsed. The Permanent Residence for “Out-of-Status” Construction Workers in the GTA Public Policy was extended for an additional six (6) months, starting on January 3, 2024, and planning to end on July 2, 2024.
By offering a pathway to permanent residency, Canada is recognizing the contributions of these workers and ensuring they can continue to support the country’s infrastructure needs without the constant worry of legal uncertainties.
Eligible individuals must prepare their applications promptly. The IRCC website provides detailed instructions on the necessary documentation and the application process.
The availability of the permanent residence program has been extended until July 2, 2024, or until 1,000 principal applicants have been granted permanent residence, whichever comes first. This extension offers a valuable chance for more workers to apply and benefit from this pathway to stability and security.
