Permanent Residents of Canada must have a valid PR card in order to enter Canada via any commercial carrier such as plane, bus, train, or boat – if you do not have a valid PR card, you will not be allowed to board the vehicle.

You may enter Canada without a valid PR card via the land border in a private vehicle or at an airport via private plane. However, this is not recommended as failure to present a valid PR card can cause problems at Canadian customs when you enter Canada in the future.

Our Service

Our office will help you renew or replace your Canadian permanent resident card. We will:

  • Confirm that you meet the eligibility requirements to submit a PR card application
  • Advise what documents are required for your application
  • Complete the application form for you
  • Write a cover letter explaining why your application should be approved
  • Request urgent processing if applicable
  • Act as your representative with the government of Canada

Only a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant, such as our partners, or a Canadian Immigration Lawyer or member of the Chambres de Notaires du Quebec can accept a fee to be your representative with IRCC

What are the requirements to renew my PR card?

To renew your PR card, you must be a permanent resident of Canada and meet the residence requirement of having spent at least 730 days out of the last 5 years inside Canada, or meet one of the exemptions (see below).

You do not need to currently have, or have ever had a PR card – you can apply to get your first or replace your PR card now.

You must have a valid passport to renew your PR card. If you do not have a valid passport, and it is impossible for you to obtain one, contact us to discuss your options.

Urgent Processing

If you need your PR card urgently, you may qualify for urgent processing. The government is very strict regarding acceptable reasons for urgent processing of a PR card. These can include:

  • Severe illness or death of a relative outside Canada
  • Requirement to prove PR status for work
  • Requirement to travel outside Canada for work

This list is not comprehensive – contact us to see if you qualify for urgent processing of your PR card.

You may find more information about PR card application urgent processing here.

Outside of Canada? You may still qualify

If you live outside Canada fulltime you may still meet the requirements or be able to apply based on humanitarian or compassionate grounds. If this is the case, please book a consultation with us.

Renew your PR Card from Outside Canada

If you meet one of the exemptions to the residence requirement, you may renew your PR card from outside Canada. Exemptions include:

  • Living outside Canada with a Canadian spouse
  • Working outside Canada fulltime for a Canadian company

This list is not comprehensive and there are other reasons that you may renew your PR card from outside Canada and be eligible to do so despite having been inside Canada for fewer than 730 days in the past 2 years.

In situations like these, we recommend that the application you submit address your frequent/extended absences from Canada as well as support the time you have spent in Canada. In other words, it should not be the usual PR card application.

Contact us for more information regarding applying for a PR card from outside Canada. Please note that the prices above do not apply to applications based upon exemptions to the 730 day physical presence requirement. Average costs for a PR card application from outside Canada or based on exemptions to the requirement range from $1400 – $3000.

To see if you can renew your PR Card from outside of Canada, book a consultation with us.

Renew a PR card on Humanitarian and Compassionate Grounds

If you have been unable to meet the residency requirement to maintain permanent resident status – being physically present in Canada for at least 730 days out of the last 5 years, or meeting one of the exemptions – you may be eligible to renew your PR card on Humanitarian and Compassionate grounds.

H&C can be used for a PR card renewal application under many different types of circumstances which were beyond the applicant’s control. These can include:

  • Severe injury or illness outside Canada
  • Severe injury, illness, or death of a close family member outside Canada
  • Caring for a relative or de facto relative outside Canada who is a minor child or who is unable to care for themselves

This list is not comprehensive and there are many other circumstances which could lead to a successful application to renew a PR card under H&C grounds.

Unless a negative residency determination has been made regarding your PR status, you may submit an application to renew a PR card under H&C grounds no matter how long your PR card has been expired.

If you believe you may meet the requirements to renew your PR card under H&C grounds, schedule a consultation with us to discuss your situation.

Please note that the prices above do not apply to applications based upon Humanitarian and Compassionate Considerations. Average costs for a PR card application based on H&C grounds start at $2000.00.
