In this article, you’ll learn about:
- IRCC’s plan to transition to 100% online applications for permanent resident programs;
- When transitions will take effect for different programs.
Permanent Residence Applications To Go Completely Online
On September 1, 2022, it was announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that most of Canada’s permanent residence immigration programs will begin transitioning to a fully online application process starting on September 23, 2022.
Since March 31, 2022, the Permanent Residence Portal was already in use for certain applicants, including spousal sponsorship PR application. The process for nearly all PR applications will be fully online by October 28, 2022.
If your application is received before the deadline for your particular program, your file will be processed as normal. However, if you apply before the deadline, but
- Your application is returned as incomplete, OR
- Your application does not arrive at IRCC prior to the deadline due to mailing or courier delays
your application will be returned and you will have to re-submit online.
When Each PR Program Will Go Online
The following chart shows when each program will be transitioning to online applications:

Be sure to check this chart to see if you will be applying by paper near your program’s deadline to be able to account for worst-case mailing time and ensure your application is not bounced back.
In the event that you are unable to apply online and require accommodation, such as due to a disability, IRCC will be providing an alternative method of application.
If applying with our team, we will advise you on your best options throughout the process, keeping in mind your deadlines.
